Karl Eggert’s interest in the ancient craft of gilding was inspired at a young age after attending a Tutankhamen exhibition.
Art Gilding was founded in 1975 by Karl Eggert, who trained as a church restorer in Cologne, Germany. Karl is one of the world’s pre-eminent experts on metal leaf gilding with more than 45 years of experience.
He is passionate and devoted to this fascinating craft and takes great pleasure in the long-lasting effects of his work.
In the past this ancient craft with all its secrets was passed from father to son, but in 1999 Karl, together with his wife Brigitte founded the Art Gilding Academy to make this beautiful craft of gilding available to anybody who wants to learn it.
With a reputation for impeccable craftsmanship, Art Gilding has undertaken hundreds of significant projects in Australia, Europe and Asia.
Our projects include State Parliament House NSW, Sydney Town Hall, NSW Government House, Star City Casino, 5 Star Hotels, many churches and prestigious office buildings as well as the Golden Chariot of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
Worldwide, Art Gilding’s unsurpassed reputation has led to many significant commissions including the Stamford Hotel Singapore and the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur.
Art Gilding has also completed many private projects in residential and commercial premises. From restaurants and multi-million dollar yachts to private residences, Art Gilding has created hundreds of stunning finishes.
